카메룬 출신 스타트업 창업자 메메 "한국 사회, 다양성 더 잘 보듬어"

카메룬 출신 스타트업 창업자인 메메 음베(40)가 지난 5일 거주지인 충남 아산의 한 카페에서 진행된 인터뷰에서 한 말이다.
2012년 교환학생으로 처음 한국 땅을 밟은 메메는 어느덧 14년째 한국살이를 이어가고 있다.
유럽 유학을 준비하던 중 경기대 교환학생 프로그램을 알게 되면서 한국행을 선택했다.
경기대 국제산업정보학과를 졸업한 그는 예명대학원대학교에서 석사 과정을 마친 뒤 인공지능(AI) 기반 스타트업인 '함께모드(Hamkke Mode)'를 세워 창업가의 길을 걷고 있다.
영어권 국가가 아닌 한국은 모든 것이 새롭게 느껴지는 환경이었지만, 지금은 자신의 삶을 바꾼 가장 의미 있는 선택으로 기억한다.
"한국은 제게 단순히 공부만 한 나라가 아닙니다. 저는 한국에서 진정한 어른으로 성장했습니다."
메메는 한국 사회가 지난 10여년간 적잖이 변했다고 느낀다.
"처음 한국에 왔을 때는 지하철에서 제 옆자리에 앉기를 꺼리는 사람들을 자주 봤습니다. 하지만 지금은 확연히 달라졌습니다. 한국 사회가 다양성을 훨씬 자연스럽게 받아들이고 있다는 걸 느낍니다."
한국에서 그는 가정을 이루는 행운도 얻었다.
대학원에 다니던 중 라이베리아 출신 유학생인 지금의 아내를 만나 2023년 결혼했다.
뷰티살롱을 운영하는 아내는 메메에게 가장 든든한 인생 반려자이면서 조력자이기도 하다.
부부는 현재 세 살배기 딸과 생후 4개월 된 아들을 키우며 바쁜 일상을 보내고 있다.
창업은 한국에 오기 전부터 메메가 품어온 꿈이었다.
오래전부터 "새로운 가치는 다양한 사람의 생각이 모일 때 만들어진다"고 믿어온 그는 법무부와 중소벤처기업부가 운영하는 외국인 창업 지원 프로그램(OASIS)을 통해 창업 교육과 전문가 멘토링을 받으며 사업 모델을 구체화했다.
코로나19 유행 이전에 영어와 프랑스어 강사로 활동하기도 했던 그는 이후 팀원 3명과 함께 AI 스타트업 '함께모드'를 설립했다.
현재 가장 공을 들이는 프로젝트는 AI 기반 스마트 충전 플랫폼인 '스탠드 IQ(Stand IQ)'다.
스마트폰이나 태블릿을 충전하는 거치대에 AI 기능을 접목한 제품으로, 단순 충전을 넘어 사용자가 필요한 정보를 저장하고 관리할 수 있도록 하는 것이 핵심이다. 프로토타입을 개발 중인데, 올해 안에 공개할 계획이다.
두 번째 프로젝트는 '아기 밴드(Agi Band·가칭)'다.
영아의 수면 주기를 분석해 부모가 아이의 생활 리듬을 쉽게 파악할 수 있게 하는 AI 기반 육아 제품이다. 세 살배기 딸과 생후 4개월 된 아들을 키우는 메메는 육아 경험에서 제품 아이디어를 얻었다고 말했다.
세 번째는 웹툰 형식을 활용해 외국인들이 한국 사회와 문화를 보다 쉽게 이해하도록 돕는 플랫폼이다. 한국 생활 정보와 아프리카를 비롯한 다양한 국가 사람들의 이야기를 웹툰 형식으로 전달하는 서비스도 구상하고 있다.

그는 "혁신은 혼자 이룰 수 있는 것이 아니라 다양한 사람들의 생각과 경험이 모일 때 가능하다"며 "다양한 분야의 전문가들과 협업해 혁신적인 제품을 꾸준히 선보이고 싶다"고 말했다.
메메는 아직 걸음마 단계인 스타트업을 운영하고 있지만 그의 목표는 분명하다.
"앞으로 성공한 기업인이 되고 싶습니다. 제게 기회를 준 한국에서 많은 사람의 삶을 더 편리하게 하는 제품과 서비스를 내놓겠습니다."
현재 창업비자(D-8)로 한국에 머무는 그는 사업이 안정적으로 성장하면 영주권 취득도 추진할 계획이다.
메메는 한국 사회를 향해 "다른 문화에 호기심을 가져주면 좋겠다"며 "서로를 이해하려는 적은 노력만으로도 더 좋은 사회를 만들 수 있다고 믿는다"고 말했다.
한국에서 사업하려는 외국인들에게는 "한국은 노력하는 사람에게 기회를 주는 나라"라며 "저 역시 그 기회를 얻을 수 있었다"고 했다.

Those were the words of Meme Mbe, a 40-year-old startup founder from Cameroon, during an interview with Yonhap News in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, on July 5.
Meme first arrived in South Korea in 2012 as an exchange student and is now in his 14th year in the country.
While preparing to study in Europe, he learned about Kyonggi University's exchange student program and decided to come to Korea instead.
After graduating from Kyonggi University's Department of International Industrial Information and completing a master's degree at Yemyung Graduate University, he founded the AI startup Hamkke Mode and embarked on a career as an entrepreneur.
Although everything in Korea felt unfamiliar at first, living in a non-English-speaking country ultimately became the most meaningful decision of his life.
"Korea was not just a place where I studied. I truly grew into an adult here," he said.
Looking back on more than a decade in Korea, Meme believes Korean society has changed considerably.
"When I first arrived, people often avoided sitting next to me on the subway," he said. "But things have changed dramatically. I feel that Korean society has become much more accepting of diversity."
Korea also brought him a family.
While attending graduate school, he met his wife, a Liberian international student, and the couple married in 2023.
His wife, who runs a beauty salon, has become not only his life partner but also his strongest supporter.
They are now raising a 3-year-old daughter and a 4-month-old son.
Starting a business had long been Meme's dream.
Believing that "new value is created when diverse ideas come together," he refined his business model through OASIS, a startup support program for foreign entrepreneurs operated by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, he also worked as an English and French instructor. He later founded AI startup Hamkke Mode with a three-member team.
The company's flagship project is Stand IQ, an AI-powered smart charging platform.
The product combines a smartphone or tablet charging stand with AI functions that can store and manage user information. A prototype is currently under development and is scheduled to be unveiled later this year.
Its second project, tentatively named Agi Band -- "agi" means "baby" in Korean -- is an AI-based childcare device designed to analyze infants' sleeping patterns and help parents better understand their babies' daily routines.
Meme said the idea came from his own experience raising his young children.
The third project is a webtoon-based platform designed to help foreigners better understand Korean society and culture while introducing stories from Africa and other parts of the world.
Meme declined to elaborate on the technical details of the three products, saying patent applications were pending and that premature disclosure could expose key information to competitors.
The name Hamkke Mode reflects his philosophy of collaboration.
Its three core values are Together Technology, Together Team and Together Customer.
Describing himself as "an idea person rather than an engineer," Meme said innovation becomes possible only when people with different ideas and experiences work together.
"I want to continue developing innovative products by collaborating with experts from diverse fields," he said.
Although his startup is still in its infancy, Meme's ambition is clear.
"I want to become a successful entrepreneur," he said. "I hope to develop products and services that make people's lives more convenient in the country that has given me so many opportunities."
Currently staying in Korea on a D-8 startup visa, he plans to apply for permanent residency once his business becomes firmly established.
He hopes Korean society will become even more open to different cultures.
"I hope people will be curious about cultures different from their own. I believe even small efforts to understand one another can make society a better place," Meme said.
For foreigners hoping to start businesses in Korea, he offered a simple message: "Korea is a country that rewards hard work. I was fortunate enough to receive that opportunity myself."
