When the mother of a lawyer was called for jury duty, she felt confident of her ability to answer the questions asked of prospective jurors. As a young attorney, the son had filled her in on what to expect. Asked about the occupations of family members, she answered, “My son is a lawyer.” As a follow-up, she was asked if she had ever used the services of an attorney. “Only to mow my lawn.”
배심원 일을 하도록 지명된 변호사의 어머니는 그렇게 지명된 사람들이 받는 질문에 잘 대답해낼 자신이 있다고 생각했다. 젊은 변호사인 아들은 어머니가 어떤 질문을 받게 될지 설명해드리면서 질문했다. 가족들의 직업을 묻자 어머니는 “아들이 변호사입니다”라고 대답했다. 후속 질문은 변호사를 써본 일이 있느냐는 것이었다.
“잔디 깎는 일을 하는 데만 써봤어요.”
