(서울=연합뉴스) 박세진 기자 = "한국은 세계 여러 나라에 귀중한 교훈을 주는 훌륭한 국가 발전 모델입니다. 제가 난민 지위를 신청한 배경에는 정치적 상황도 있었지만, 이곳에서 학문적·직업적 여정을 이어가고 싶다는 판단이 컸습니다."
국내 '난민 출신 1호 박사'로 알려진 에티오피아 국적의 신타예후 아스파우 에르메코 씨가 걸어온 인생 궤적은 극적인 전환의 연속이다.
신타예후 씨는 아디스아바바 대학에서 언론·커뮤니케이션학을 전공하고 방송과 신문 기자로 경력을 쌓은 뒤 공직에 입문해 홍보 담당관·장관 자문역 등을 거쳤다.
특히 수자원·관개부에서 변화관리 총괄국장으로 10곳 이상의 산하기관을 이끈 엘리트 관료였다.
유럽 국가를 중심으로 해외 출장과 여행 경험이 많았던 그는 2015년 국제 콘퍼런스에 참석하기 위해 처음 방문한 한국에서 인생의 방향을 바꾸는 결심을 한다.
당시 고국의 불안정한 정치 상황 등을 들어 난민 지위를 신청한 것이다.

신타예후 씨의 현재 삶을 이끄는 키워드는 대학원 시절부터 전공으로 공부하고 한국에서 박사 학위까지 받은 분야인 '리더십'이다. 그는 "리더십은 직위가 아니라 삶을 이끄는 방식"이라며 "명확한 원칙과 목적을 갖고 살아가는 것이 중요하다"고 말했다.
리더십을 주제로 한 강연 활동에 적극적인 그는 개인 미디어 플랫폼인 '보이스 오브 코리아 미디어'(VOKM)를 운영하면서 한국의 발전 경험과 사회상을 아프리카에 소개하는 일도 하고 있다.
장기적으로 VOKM을 한국과 아프리카를 잇는 명실상부한 미디어 플랫폼으로 키우는 것이 그의 꿈이다.
"한국은 다국어 플랫폼을 통해 미디어의 글로벌 외연을 확장할 수 있는 잠재력이 큽니다. 미디어 배경을 가진 난민 출신 전문가들이 한국 미디어에 의미 있는 기여를 할 수 있는데, 아리랑TV 같은 곳이 좋은 모델이 될 수 있다고 봅니다."
신타예후 씨는 또 한국의 발전 전략을 아프리카 등에 전파하는 창구로 활용하기 위해 만든 '한·아프리카 리더십·개발 이니셔티브'를 이끌고 있다.
그는 한국을 비롯해 세계 곳곳에서 활약하는 아프리카 연구자들 중심 네트워크인 와레사(WARESA)의 핵심 멤버이기도 하다.
현재 무역·컨설팅 관련 일을 함께하고 있는 신타예후 씨는 한국에서 경험이 자신의 전문성을 높이는 데 중요한 자산이 됐다고 말했다.
그는 한국에 대해 "짧은 기간 내 놀라운 발전을 이룬 국가"라고 평가했다.
한국의 발전 배경에 대해선 엄격한 근로 윤리와 사회적 규범, 안정된 법과 제도를 꼽았다. 그러면서 분단 상황에서도 유지돼온 평화로운 환경은 지속 가능한 성장의 토대가 됐다고 분석했다.
신타예후 씨는 한국 발전의 원동력으로 거론되는 교육에도 주목했다.
그는 배움이 삶을 근본적으로 바꾸는 가장 강력한 수단이라며 난민 인정자들에게 한국에서 주어진 기회를 활용해 교육과 자기 계발에 투자하라고 조언했다.
그는 "한국에는 개인의 관심과 포부에 따라 선택할 수 있는 다양한 분야와 경로가 있다"고 덧붙였다.
신타예후 씨는 중장기적으로 한국 기업의 아프리카 시장 진출을 돕는 사업을 다양한 각도로 구상하고 있다.
이를 위해 '한·아프리카 리더십·개발 이니셔티브'를 중심으로 정부·민간·국제기구 간 협력 네트워크를 구축해 나갈 생각이다.
성공의 의미를 묻는 말에 그는 이렇게 답했다.

Sintayehu Asfaw Ermeco, an Ethiopian national known as the first refugee in Korea to obtain a doctoral degree, has experienced a life marked by a series of dramatic turning points.
He studied journalism and communication at Addis Ababa University and built his career as a broadcast and newspaper reporter before entering public service, where he served as a public relations officer and ministerial adviser. He was also an elite official who worked as director general in charge of change management at Ethiopia's Ministry of Water and Irrigation, overseeing more than 10 affiliated institutions.
Having frequently traveled abroad, mainly to European countries, the major turning point in his life came in 2015. During his first visit to Korea to attend an international conference, he made a decision that would change the course of his life. He applied for refugee status, citing the unstable political situation in his home country at the time.
Deeply impressed by Korea's development -- particularly given his country's role in supporting Korea during the Korean War -- he revived the academic aspirations he had been unable to fulfill back home after being granted refugee status. While supporting himself through economic activities, he devoted himself to his studies and eventually earned a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from Yemyung Graduate University in August 2023. Since the introduction of refugee provisions into Korea's Immigration Control Act in December 1993, he is known as the first recognized refugee to obtain a doctoral degree from a Korean university.
Against this backdrop, he was also honored as the Icon of the Month at the Korea-Africa Excellence Awards(KAFXA), which recognizes outstanding Africans residing in Korea, on April 5.
In an interview conducted March 30 at a cafe near Gwanghwamun in Seoul, Sintayehu shared the story of his new life in Korea.
The first barrier he faced was language. To overcome it, he spent the first six months focusing intensively on learning Korean through a government-supported program. He said language is not just a means of communication but the starting point for understanding society, adding that learning Korean helped him better understand Korean culture and social norms.
Although he holds refugee status in Korea, which grants him treatment comparable to that of Korean nationals in many respects, he is reluctant to define his identity with the label of "refugee Ph.D." He emphasized that refugee status is merely a legal classification and does not diminish one's academic ability or professional identity.
He added that many refugees possess valuable knowledge and professional experience, and expressed hope that governments would view them as assets that can contribute to national development. He noted that in some Western countries, refugee-background professionals are actively working across various sectors, including media.
A key concept that defines his current life is leadership, a field he has studied since graduate school and in which he earned his doctoral degree in Korea. He described leadership as "not a position but a way of leading one's life," emphasizing that it is important for leaders to live with clear principles and purpose.
Actively engaged in lectures on leadership, he also runs a personal media platform, Voice of Korea Media (VOKM), introducing Korea's development experience and society to Africa. In the long term, he hopes to develop VOKM into a media platform connecting Korea and Africa.
"Korea has strong potential to expand the global reach of its media through multilingual platforms. Refugee-background professionals with media experience can make meaningful contributions to Korean media, and Arirang TV could serve as a good model," he said.
He also leads the Korea-Africa Leadership and Development Initiative, which he established as a channel to share Korea's development strategies with Africa and beyond. He is also a key member of WARESA, a network of African researchers active in Korea and around the world.
Currently engaged in trade and consulting, he said that his experience in Korea has been an important asset in strengthening his professional expertise.
He described Korea as "a country that has achieved remarkable development in a short period of time." He attributed this to strong work ethics, social discipline, and a stable legal and institutional framework, adding that a peaceful environment maintained despite the division of the Korean Peninsula has provided the foundation for sustainable growth.
He also highlighted the importance of education as a key driver of Korea's development. He said that learning is the most powerful tool to fundamentally change one's life, and advised recognized refugees to make full use of the opportunities available in Korea and invest in education and self-development. He added that Korea offers diverse paths depending on individual interests and aspirations.
Looking ahead, he is exploring various ways to support Korean companies' expansion into African markets. To this end, he plans to build cooperative networks among governments, the private sector and international organizations through the Korea-Africa Leadership and Development Initiative.
When asked about the meaning of success, he replied: "Success means fulfilling one's role -- doing what one is meant to do. It is about sharing the knowledge gained along the way with society and helping others grow."
